CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

I woke in the morning with a headache from letting the audio disruptor run so long but otherwise oddly energized. I found myself humming to myself as I got ready and took care of Pox. After eating, he crawled back into the pile of blankets on top of my bed. He was off high alert and settling into his new normal.

Maybe that was it. I was satisfied with where I was, even with all the uncertainty around me. My crew was happy and relaxed. My oldest friend had joined us.

Really, the only hitch in my setup was Brutus. I still didn’t really know how I felt about it. One thing I couldn’t shake was the sensation that when I was in his arms and looking up at him, I wondered if he felt the way I did.

I shook my head. I couldn’t think of any of that. Surely, now that I knew the truth, I could keep my distance, and all my confusing feelings would just go away.

I was humming a random song as I went into the living room to grab my first meal. I flipped on the light and started when I saw Eugene sitting in the middle of the table.

“Morning, Eugene. You know, I forget that you don’t need light.”

His red light blinked. “Especially now. Horton updated my optical scanner, and it works well, even in the lowest light settings I’ve tested it in so far. But I hadn’t thought about how it separates me from the rest of the team. I’ll turn on the light next time.”

I wandered into the kitchen and raised my voice out of habit though I was sure his audio receptors were as sensitive as his visual receptors. “It’s okay. You are different than the rest of us. It’s our differences that make us work so well together. You realize that, don’t you?”

“You are saying that to placate me.”

I grabbed my food and came back to sit with Eugene. “I’m saying it because it’s true. Now that we have Kraken, we might be the most unique crew around. Are you feeling philosophical this morning?”

“I have been running that search you asked for, but the results don’t make a lot of sense.”

I moved Pox out of my lap as he tried to steal something off my plate. One of the disadvantages of the low table was how easy it was for Pox to maneuver during a moment of inattention. “How so? What did you find?”

“The victim on the card is named Martra Finley. She had resided on the Space Station for one hundred and ninety days before she was killed eighty-three days ago. The case is technically still open, though no new information has been added for eighty days, though it is accessed regularly for reading.”

“What’s in the file?”

“She was killed in the fifth bay during C shift, though she wasn’t discovered until the following shift, when employees of the restaurant took the recycling out. She was found next to the recycling unit with a deep laceration to her throat.
